At the heart of science is skepticism, the engine of insight. At the heart of scientism is dogma and censorship. Science is the Age of Enlightenment. Scientism is the Catholic Church imprisoning Galileo. Science does not dictate decisions, it informs judgments. Scientism imposes judgments on others while demonizing dissent.

I could not let this loss pass without expressing my appreciation for what Sheila Cluff did for the merchant community of Ojai. There are some people who possess a formidable energy that they can translate into action and results. Just watching Sheila walk the Arcade, you knew she meant business. Every morning as she would collect her devoted followers for their early morning walk, long before the merchants opened for business, Sheila would be touting the merchandise of each store, giving her guests the shop owners’ background and enticing them to return during business hours.

Los Padres National Forest is proposing to remove 15,228 mixed conifer trees along the ridge of Pine Mountain and Reyes Peak, east of the summit of Highway 33 north of Ojai. The largest of these targeted 12-inch to 24-inch-diameter trees are likely old-growth conifers.

While our attention has been diverted and our lives hugely disrupted by COVID-19, Black Lives Matter and more, Ojai Valley water issues and challenges have continued unabated. Water issues are not simple or straightforward. They are complicated and tangled with many players and interests in the mix, comparable to a three-dimensional chess game played on a board that changes all the time.
Soon, important decisions will be made that will have far-ranging consequences as our future is inextricably tied to water. We need to make sure that our decision-makers and institutions have the capacity and are able to exercise effective leadership to make the best plans to move us forward.
