The Nordhoff Ranger Gridiron Club will be hosting its annual golf fundraiser Aug. 1 to raise money for traditional football equipment as well as supplies to keep players safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to head coach Lance Wiggins, players like Eli Dvortcsak (left) are itching to return to action in the near future.

This year, Nordhoff High School’s main fundraising event for the football program will carry a different kind of significance. Each year the Gridiron Club hosts its annual golf tournament, which ends up being the most lucrative event of the year for the football program. In previous years, the event was mostly about the much-needed financial support, but this year is a little different due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Two teams surge ahead in Sundowner standings

The Sundowner golf league finished the eighth week of play July 7, and two teams have surged ahead in the overall and second half standings.
The team of Captain Camo and the SniPARS had impressive 63-point weeks to take the early lead in the second-half standings with 125 total points.

The Ojai Valley Inn has started accepting advanced tee times for members of the public as of June 22. The beautiful resort course is taking precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable golf experience.

The Ojai Valley Community Stadium has remained empty for months. The Nordhoff High School football program hopes to return to action next week, but several boxes need to be checked before players hit the field for offseason workouts.

Wunderlich grabs Ojai Valley Inn President's Cup

Claudia Wunderlich (left) recently won the 2020 Ojai Valley Inn Ladies Presidents Cup. Wunderlich narrowly edged Sally Matteson 3 and 2 to capture the 2020 title. The ladies who competed in the event were sure to thank Dave Doerr, the Director of Golf, and his team for putting on a safe and fun event during the COVID-19 environment.

Recent Nordhoff High School graduate Shawn Rothermel has been one of the most accomplished high school tennis players in the Ojai Valley over the last few years. Rothermel competed in The Ojai, Junior Team Tennis, the New Balance High School Championship Finals and for the NHS program in the last year.

In the spirit of virtual competition, members of the Casitas Rowing team recently faced off against teams from across the nation, via Zoom. The competition was a way to allow athletes to compete while still practicing safe social distancing.
Boyd earns academic honors

Former Nordhoff Ranger and current Baylor Bear pitcher, Luke Boyd, recently earned a spot on the Academic All Big 12 team. This is the second time Boyd has earned this recognition in his time at Baylor. In order to be eligible, student athletes must earn a 3.2 grade point average or better. At the time the NCAA baseball season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Boyd was having a terrific season and was tied for the national lead in saves with 6. He also posted an impressive earned run average of 0.83 through 9 appearances.
Sundowner golf hits the midway point of season

The first half of the Sundowner golf league season wrapped up June 23 at Soule Park Golf Course. Team Bogeymen were able to fend off a furious charge by the team of Shut The Putt Up to hang on to the title of the highest-scoring team in the first half.

Very few local football players saw the kind of success former Villanova Preparatory School star Raegan Mang did during his four-year varsity career. Mang started at quarterback as a freshman, and then eventually made the transition to running back and wide receiver later in his career and put up some of the most impressive stats in Ventura County history. The former Wildcat was best known for his productivity on offense, but he was also a force for VPS on defense and special teams.

Schools like Nordhoff High School hope to open athletic facilities in anticipation of fall sports getting underway. The CIF recently announced it hopes to make a decision on fall sports by July 20, but uncertainty around COVID-19 continues to slow the decision-making process.

Davis' albatross highlights Sundowner golf league play

Scotty Davis stole the show in week five Sundowner play by hitting one of the most memorable shots in recent league memory. Davis, of Bob Martin's Leftovers, was able to jar a five-iron from nearly 200 yards away on the par-5 fifth hole at Soule Park to record an extremely rare double-eagle. The gross score of 2 is referred to as an "albatross" and is one of only a handful that have occurred over the course of the league's 30-year history.

Paola Avila was recently named head coach of the Nordhoff High School cheer team.

Paola Avila joined the Nordhoff High School cheer team as a freshman and was a member of the squad all four years of her high school career, now the 2017 graduate will serve as the program’s head coach.

The Scramblers team exploded for 71 total points June 4 as part of the Sundowner Golf League week three play. The 71-point total is the highest team total in recent memory, and helped the team jump from tenth place all the way into the top spot for the week.
